Whether you’re meeting someone for the first time, introducing yourself in a classroom, writing a short bio, or preparing for a speaking test like IELTS or TOEFL, the Present Simple tense is your go-to tool. It’s one of the most important building blocks of English – especially when it comes to basic introductions.
What is the Present Simple?
The Present Simple tense is used to describe:
- Who you are
- Where you live
- What you do
- What you like or don’t like
- Your habits or routines
Even though it’s called “simple,” this tense is incredibly powerful – especially for building confidence as an English learner.
Key Uses for Self-Introductions
| Use | Explanation | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Your name, nationality, profession | I am Zara. I’m from Bangladesh. I am a nurse. |
| Residence | Where you live or are based | I live in Dubai. |
| Occupation | What you do for work or study | I work in marketing. I study at university. |
| Interests | What you like/dislike or enjoy doing | I like watching movies. I don’t like loud music. |
Structure and Sentence Patterns
Here are the most common sentence patterns used in Present Simple when introducing yourself:
1. Talking About Yourself
- I am + [name/job/nationality]
- I am John.
- I am an engineer.
- I am Indian.
📝 Tip: You can use the contraction “I’m” in spoken English to sound more natural.
👉 I’m a student. I’m from Nepal.
2. Saying Where You Live
- I live in + [city/country/neighbourhood]
- I live in Colombo.
- I live in a small town near Kandy.
- I live in Australia now, but I’m originally from India.
📝 “Live” is used with no -ing in Present Simple: not “I am living” for basic facts.
3. Talking About Your Job or Studies
- I work at/in/for + [company/field]
- I work at a hospital.
- I work in IT.
- I work for a tech company.
- I study + [subject] / at + [place]
- I study economics.
- I study at Delhi University.
📝 Use “at” for specific places; “in” for departments or sectors.
4. Sharing Your Interests
- I like / I love / I enjoy + [noun or verb+ing]
- I like reading books.
- I love cricket.
- I enjoy listening to music.
- I don’t like / I hate + [noun or verb+ing]
- I don’t like spicy food.
- I hate waking up early.
📝 Using interests is a great way to make your introduction more personal and engaging.
5. Extra Add-ons to Sound Fluent
You can combine ideas and make your self-introduction more natural:
- Hi, my name is Ramesh. I’m from Nepal. I live in Kathmandu. I’m a student, and I study business at university. I enjoy hiking and playing the guitar.
- Hello! I’m Ana. I’m Brazilian, but I live in Melbourne now. I work in digital marketing, and I love learning new languages.
Grammar Notes
✅ Verb Agreement
When using “I,” the base form of the verb stays the same:
- I live, I work, I like
(NOT: I lives / I works / I likes)
✅ Negative Form
To make a negative sentence:
I don’t + base verb
- I don’t eat meat.
- I don’t speak French.
📝 “Don’t” = do not
✅ Question Form
To ask someone else, use:
- Do you + base verb?
- Do you live in Colombo?
- Do you like music?
